Fall is one of the busiest seasons in ministry. Here is how to find qualified, called staff before the season gets away from you.
How to Hire the Right Church Staff This Fall
Fall arrives fast in ministry. New programs launch, attendance climbs, and the demands on your team multiply almost overnight. If your church is heading into this season understaffed, you already know the feeling — too much to do, not enough people to do it.
After more than 50 years in church ministry, I have watched congregations thrive and struggle based on one variable more than any other: the quality and fit of their staff. The right person in the right role changes everything. The wrong hire — or no hire at all — costs far more than the salary you were trying to save.
Start With Clarity, Not a Job Posting
Before you post anything, get clear on what you actually need. Not just the title. The function. Ask your leadership team:
- What is not getting done right now that should be?
- Where are our current staff members stretched beyond their calling?
- What would a thriving version of this role look like in two years?
A vague job description attracts vague candidates. Specificity attracts people who are genuinely called to what you are describing.
Look for Called, Not Just Qualified
Credentials matter. Experience matters. But in ministry, calling matters most. I have seen highly credentialed candidates flame out within a year because the work did not align with who God made them to be. And I have seen candidates with modest resumes become pillars of a congregation because they were exactly where they were supposed to be.
During your interview process, ask questions that surface calling:
- "Tell me about a moment in ministry when you felt most alive."
- "What would you do in this role that no job description could capture?"
- "Where do you sense God is taking you in the next five years?"
The answers will tell you more than any resume.
Use the Right Platform
Most churches still rely on word of mouth or generic job boards. Both have their place, but neither is built for ministry. FindAChurchJobToday.com was built specifically to connect churches with ministry professionals who are actively seeking their next calling — not just their next paycheck.
When you post where called people are looking, you find called people.
Move Quickly Once You Find the Right Person
Ministry candidates who are genuinely gifted and called do not stay available for long. If your process takes three months of committee meetings and approval chains, you will lose the best candidates to congregations that move with more intention.
That does not mean rushing a decision. It means having your process ready before you need it — so when the right person appears, you can act.
Fall Is Not Too Late
If you are reading this in October and thinking you have missed your window — you have not. Fall is actually one of the best times to hire in ministry. Many ministry professionals make transitions at the end of summer and are actively looking right now.
The right person for your team is out there. They are praying for a congregation like yours. Go find them.
