The Secret to True Freedom: Why Gratefulness Changes Everything

Have you ever crossed paths with someone who radiates an undeniable, contagious joy?

They always have an authentic smile ready. They laugh easily — not just at jokes, but at themselves. They carry an unshakeable lightness, completely unburdened by what the world thinks or says about them. That posture isn't naivety; it is freedom. At its root, that kind of freedom comes from a life anchored in gratitude.

Think back to the last time someone truly showed you deep appreciation. Or recall the person who stepped up when you needed an ally — someone who stood in your corner, defended your name, and proved they were on your team. Those moments stick with us because genuine gratitude softens our hearts and reframes how we see the world.

Releasing the Weight

Reaching this stage of life offers a profound clarity. Looking back over 71 years, I made a conscious, deliberate choice: to let go of every remaining ounce of anger, bitterness, pain, and disappointment.

Carrying old wounds is a heavy, exhausting burden, and life is too brief to spend it looking backward with regret. Instead, I choose daily to focus on the overwhelming goodness and faithfulness of God.

Through seven decades, God has sustained me:

  • I have never known a day of true hunger.
  • I have always had a safe bed to lay my head at night.
  • He opened academic and professional doors no human effort could have forced open — guiding me through a Bachelor's in Music Education, a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and a PsyD in Behavioral Health Leadership in 2023, which equipped me to run a medical facility.
  • Even now, as I pursue a PhD in Developmental Psychology of Children and Adolescents, every study, every client, and every milestone reminds me of His hand.

In every single step, God has protected me, guided my path, and cleared the way.

An Invitation to Pause

Gratitude is rarely accidental; it is a discipline.

I urge you to hit pause on the busyness of your schedule today. When was the last time you sat down before a meal and genuinely thanked God for the nourishment? When did you last give thanks for the quiet miracle of having the means to pay your monthly bills, or the privilege of having enough left over to bless someone in need?

One of the cornerstone verses of my life has always been Luke 6:38:

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

Living generously and living gratefully are inseparable sides of the same coin. Over forty years ago, I heard a life-altering sermon by evangelist Chuck Millhuff. That message shattered my perspective. It didn't just challenge me to become a more giving man; it taught me how to live in a continuous posture of thankfulness — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Take a moment to watch or listen to that powerful message:

Take a breath today. Release whatever grievance you're holding on to, count the blessings right in front of you, and move forward in the freedom of a grateful heart.

Be blessed,
